GREEN-UP DAY 2009-56% RECYCLED! First of all, we of the town of Sharon Conservation Commission, want to thank everyone, young and old, who did their part in making the GREEN -UP 2009 event a tremendous success! This year's theme was REDUCE, REUSE,RECYCLE and this year's Poster Contest, held annually in the Sharon Elementary School , was won by the First and Second Grade with the title WHAT ON EARTH ARE WE DOING? And it was just not cleaning up our local road ways as we have been doing for the past thirty-nine years! The Greater Upper Valley Solid Waste District was again fully engaged with four rollout containers, each 24 feet long for metal recycling of which three were totally full. The GUVSWD took in 400 tires, appliances, oil, electronics, washing machines, refrigerators...you name it and it came...old horse drawn hay rakes, hugh satellite dishes, The Sharon Academy attacked the daunting task of reclaiming a hydro site from years of dumping. The Energy Committee and The Girl Scouts kept us going with wonderful food. And, again, the Sharon Town road crew hung in there with us to the end. Also, this year we attempted sorting all that stuff littering our country side. Oh,yea! tables were set up, barrels labeled and all those green bags opened up, spread out and separated into paper, glass, PETE 1, HDPE 2,and aluminum. Of the 1695 pounds weighed, only 758 pounds actually ended up in the Town truck to be land filled; the rest recycled down at the Hartford Transfer Station. We collected $54.00 from 5 cent redeemables from all that recycled material and that amount was donated to the construction of the memorial in Sharon to honor one of our fallen sons in Iraq. All this done with volunteers and in one eight hour day! Thank you, one and all! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! Green Up 2010 was the 40th anniversary of Green Up in the state. Comments of the participants of the first Green Up Day or any successive years events are encouraged at greenupvermont.blogspot.com May 7th 2011 activities include:
